On April 21, 2023, the annual International Microbiology Olympiad took place on the basis of the Department of Microbiology, Virology of Asfendiyarov KazNMUю

It was an event dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Department.

Eleven teams took part in the Olympiad: three in Kazakh, five in Russian and three in English. The participants represented medical universities of Almaty – Asfendiyarov KazNMU,  al-Farabi KazNU, and other cities of Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries: Astana Medical University, South Kazakhstan Medical Academy, Shymkent, “KIMYO” International University of Tashkent, Tashkent Pediatric Medical University, Bukhara State Medical Institute named after Abu Ali ibn Sino, Republic of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyz State Medical Academy named after I.K. Akhunbayev, Bishkek, Republic of Kyrgyzstan.

The Olympiad consisted of two stages. The first round of the Olympiad took the form of a blitz survey on the topics of General Microbiology, including questions on the morphology and physiology of bacteria, nutrient media and serological reactions. This stage allowed the participants to demonstrate theoretical knowledge.

The second round of the Olympiad included the reception of practical skills on the basis of the Department of Microbiology, Virology. The participants needed to demonstrate proficiency in practical microbiological skills, such as autopsy of a laboratory animal, preparation of stamp-smear and their staining, mastery of microscopy techniques, demonstration of inoculation techniques, performing serological reactions and interpretation of results.

Members of the international jury included both teachers of  Asfendiyarov KazNMU and foreign guest-team leaders. They evaluated the participants’ answers.

According to the results of the International Olympiad dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Department of Microbiology, Virology, the winners were:
