History of the Department

The department of pathophysiology was organized in 1933. From this year until 1946 the department was headed by Professor N.E. Glekler, A.A. Znachkova, associated professor Chetvertak, Professor C.M. Leites.

In 1946-1969 years the department was headed by Professor Glozman Osip Sergeyevich, the outstanding scientist who made the significant contribution to pathophysiological science and has created the Kazakhstan pathophysiological school.

For this period under the leadership of prof. O. S. Glozman the staff of the department carried out researches on organism detoxication at various poisonings and implementation the results into clinical work. Methodic of full and partial blood exchange was created and possibility of treatment of hemolytic disease of newborns and exogenous intoxication was proved. The results of studies were reflected in three Doctor’s (N.P. Kasatkina, H.S. Nasybullina, and S.I. Karabaeva) and 12 candidate’s dissertations and 4 monographs (O. S. Glozman and A.P.Kasatkina). The logical extension of this research was to study the methods of detoxification with the apparatus “artificial kidney”, pulmonary peritoneal dialysis, plasmapheresis, cross- circulation, replanting of allogennny donor kidney (K.A. Savchenko, E.L. Beisebayeva, N. N. Abalakina , A. A. Zelinskaya , L.I .Zavalishina, etc.).

From 1969 to 1991 the department was headed by MD, Professor Nasybullina Khalida Sadykovna. Under the leadership of prof. H.S. Nasybullina the stuff of the department studied pathogenesis of acute blood loss and transfusion therapy at animals with experimental diabetes, a Hypokinesy and chronic alcohol intoxication. 7 dissertations were devoted to these themes (N.M. Nazarenko, Karynbaev S.S., T.P. Udartseva, A.A. Imambaeva, S.P.  Lobanov, N.V. Seytmuhambetova)  N.N. Ryspekova , G.L. Mukanova , N.V. Zhuiko, J.M Duyseneeva studied metabolic and functional disorders in animals with protein unbalanced diet and limited physical activity, intoxication by some anthropogenic pollutants. Under the guidance of prof. Kh.S. Nasybullina 14 candidate dissertations were fulfilled, two collections of scientific papers were published. Republic scientific conference of pathophysiologists was organized (1982). In the same period, under the guidance of professor of M.S. Saulebekova 2  candidate dissertations devoted to study the effect of monochromatic red light on the course of the inflammatory process were fulfilled (A.A. Shortanbaev, T.T. Meldehanov).
The essential feature of the department under the supervision of Professor Nasybullina Kh.S. was the work on improvement of new forms of educational methodic – the use of modern technics at lectures and classes, machine and paper test monitoring of students, writing and oral form of exam, students’ independent work, etc.

From 1991 to 2013 the department was headed by DM, Professor Nurmukhambetov Adilman Nurmuhambetovich, Professor T.A. Nazarova’s student. He is the founder of ecological pathophysiology in Kazakhstan.

Professor A.N. Nurmukhambetov made an essential contribution to investigation deep mechanisms of anthropogenous pollutants effects, such as exhaust gases of the diesel engine and heavy metals. He offered new methods of pathogenetic correction by preparations received from local vegetable raw materials.

Under the leadership of A. Nurmuhambetov  3  Doctor’s (T.T.Meldehanov, 1995; T.P. Udartseva 2002, D.A. Adilbekova, 2009) and 14 Phd  theses (Ahmedshina D.A., Balabekova M.K, Kasenov B.J., Tolepbergenova M.J, etc.) were performed.  Professor AN Nurmukhambetov is the author of scientific monograph “Antioxidant protection of myocardium and brain chemical damage,” four invention certificates.

8 collections of scientific works are issued under his editorship.

Professor A.N. Nurmukhambetov made a great contribution to the development of teaching pathophysiology in Kazakh language. He published more than 200 papers, 11 books, among them – 8 in the Kazakh language, 6 medical dictionaries of medical terms. He is the author of the first textbook “Pathophysiology” in Kazakh language for students of medical universities (1995), which was republished further in 2000 and 2007 years.  In 2010 the textbook “Clinical pathophysiology” in the Kazakh language was published.

From 2003 to 2005 years the Department was supervised by the candidate of medical sciences, associate professor Karynbaev Shabazz Sibugatullovich. During this period, the department carried out the introduction of modern innovative methods of training: educational video movies, multimedia presentations of lectures (Associate Professor Ryspekova NN, Assoc. Kassenov B.ZH.),  computer training programs (Associate Professor S.S. Karynbaev, Assoc. Ryspekova N.N.). Associate Professor S.S. Karynbaev much attention paid to the training of young specialists.

From 2005 to 2007 year A.N. Nurmuhambetov’s  student, doctor of Medical Sciences Udartseva Tatiana Pavlovna, highly qualified pathophysiologist, an experienced pedagogue and lecturer led the Department. Professor Udartseva’s Research is devoted to the problems of environmental pathophysiology. She has published about 150 scientific and methodical works, including the monograph     «Mechanisms of adaptation to combined effects of lead and limitation of movement.” Under her leadership, two candidate dissertations were performed (Zhuyko N.V., Dyseneeva J.M.). During this period, much work was done to improve the educational and methodical process, to create an educational program for integrated education, to improve the material and technical base of the department. Much attention was paid to the training of young specialists. “School for young pathophysiologists” and theoretical seminar were organized.

Since 2013 PhD, Associate Professor Marina Kazybaevna Balabekova has been supervising the department. M.K. Balabekova actively engaged in scientific work, is involved in two scientific programs, and has more than 100 publications. M.K. Balabekova actively involves students in research work. Within the last five years she is the supervisor of student’s works which took prizes at KazNMU student’s scientific conference, at the international scientific and practical conferences (Kirov, 2012, 2013).
For success in teaching methods and research work M.K. Balabekova was awarded the bronze medal S.D. Asfendiyarov KazNMU, Silver V.I. Vernadsky medal. She has the title “Honored Worker of Science and Education.”

Modern KazNMU Department of Pathological Physiology is one of the leaders in university in organization of educational process

The department has qualified teachers: 2 doctors of medical sciences, 9 candidates of medical sciences. Proportion of teachers with advanced degrees and titles is 73%. Prof. A.N .Nurmukhambetov holds the title of Asfendiyarov Prize winner and honorary professor of KazNMU.

The main attention of the department is paid to training of young specialists with high standard of knowledge, capable quickly and effectively react to modern achievements of the medical science, owning a wide range of the clinical thinking, ready to introduce technologies and innovations in practical health care. For this purpose work on creation of modern educational and methodical materials is constantly conducted.

New educational and methodical documentation according to State standard of education in Kazakh, Russian and English languages is prepared. There is a bank of multimedia presentations of lectures and classes. In 2012 the glossary of terms and definitions was added into methodical recommendations for students in three languages. That allowed the department to realize the KazNMU program of the three-lingual training.

The department introduces the innovative technologies: case-study, role games for imitating pathological processes, work with training computer programs, creation video movies on modeling of pathological processes, viewing and discussion the videos taken from Internet, etc. The Department has a computer class allowing students to receive electronic versions of educational and methodical materials and work in world medical libraries.

In 2010 two-step midterm and final control of knowledge was introduced: Step 1 is testing, the 2nd step is the pathophysiological analysis of clinical and laboratory data according to the check sheets. This control method allows estimating 5 competences formed in the course of training.

Staff of the department is involved in the implementation of MH RK research project “Development of Model of Anti-aging in Ensuring Active Longevity of Persons of Advanced Age” and the joint Kazakhstan-Kyrgyz scientific project “Studying of hemotoxic Influence of Heavy Metals and the possible activation of protective and adaptive mechanisms of the body by normal and hypobaric hypoxia in adult and old animals in Comparison” (Akanov A.A, Nurmukhambetov A.N.
